The name Airowear is renowned for expertise and experience in the equestrian market, which is why our body products are quite often used as the benchmark by competitors. Each garment is engineered to the highest specification and designed to protect riders of all levels from happy hackers to to extreme eventers. Whilst we focus on every detail, we also ensure that every single garment provides the maximum protection, freedom, comfort and appearance that is required for this sport.
All of our body protectors are rigorously tested to the BETA safety standards and tested by our top riders for flexibility in movement, comfort and durability. Our extensive testing and feedback from our riders and test houses enable us to continually develop and create ever-improving equestrian sports gear.
In 1991, Airowear was the first company to manufacture body protectors conforming to the new British Equestrian Trade Standard (BETA).
In 1995 the hugely successful 'Reiver' tabard styled body protector was launched, followed in Autumn 1998 by the 'Zippa' and the 'Zippa Plus'. The Zippa Plus hit the press as a 'Breakthrough in Body Protection' for being the first complete protective jacket which offered integral shoulder protection.
In May 2000, Airowear was the first (and second!) to conform to the new European standard (EN13158:2000) for Body Protectors and BETA 2000 with their Reiver and Zippa 2000 models.
In 2001, Airowear added to its product catalogue by introducing Troxel’s equestrian riding helmets to the UK market. These helmets are designed by one of the world's foremost research and development teams, with expertise gained in the aerospace industry and critical care medicine. Troxel are renowned for introducing the very first vented equestrian riding helmets and their expertise has been utilised to develop an outstanding range of the lightest most comfortable vented head protection available.
In 2007, Airowear were the first to design a no-fuss solution for horse riders to add XC colours to their existing tabard body protectors with 'Colour Swap', the body protector XC silks. This meant riders could easily change their XC colours depending on the occasion and brought an element of fun to a safety garment.
Also in 2007, Airowear received a finalist award for the North East Business Awards in March.
In 2008, the hugely successful 'Outlyne' body protector for women was launched and was the only body protector to received a finalist award at the BETA International Innovation Awards for the 'Safety & Security' category. It was highly commended by the judges for being "comfortable, wearable, flexible and made for the female form"
Also in 2008, The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) announced Airowear as the official supplier of safety vests for the 2008 US Eventing Team ahead of the games in Hong King in August 2008.
At the end of 2008, BodyBase, the essential baselayer for managing body moisture was launched, ahead of the 2009 competition season.
In 2009, Airowear upgraded their Outlyne body protector to EN13158:2009 alongside the launch of their accompanying baselayer BodyBase.
So far, 2010 has been a busy year for Airowear, as the Reiver Elite has just been upgraded to EN13158:2009 with a new name Reiver 010.
The brand choice of Eventing professionals worldwide, Airowear is the body protector of choice for Ruth Edge (BE ranking number 6), Amy Young, Julie Tew and Jamie Atkinson. Airowear is also the brand choice of leading US Event rider Karen O'Connor and her team.
Airowear produce a number of styles of body protector to ensure riders of all shapes and sizes can safely fit into suitable safety gear for their chosen discipline.
The Reiver Elite is our very popular unisex tabard garment, which provides a smart fit for
children, men and women. The strength of the Reiver Elite as a style comes from its ease to fit and the availability of over 80 sizes to ensure a superb fit for all body shapes.
The Outlyne is the flexible zip-fronted body protector for women of all shapes and sizes. It has been developed through years of scientific research into how a body protector should fit the female figure. Outlyne combines maximum protection and unrestrictive movement with a perfect fit and super soft flexibility.
Cross country colours can be ordered in the Outlyne body protector. Colour Swap is the alternative to XC colours for riders who have the Reiver Elite style of body protector. Colour Swap is a body protector silk for riders to wear over their tabards.
Troxel helmets from Airowear offer an outstanding range of the lightest, most comfortable vented helmets in the UK. They come in a variety of styles from show helmets, to endurance to show jumping. They conform to BSEN 1384 approved and ASTM F1163/SEI Certified.
And for a different kind of safety, our range of certified hi-viz clothing conforms to PPE
Regulations and European Standards as a guarantee that our hi-viz clothing makes the wearer more visible to others through it’s colour and reflective properties. As with all our safety garments, our hi-viz clothing is tailored to provide smart and neatly tailored appearances. To provide additional visibility, we also design and manufacture hi-viz accessories to attach to the horse and tack in a choice of yellow, pink or green.
BodyBase is the name of our baselayer, which is seen as an essential part of any sports rider's kit. Whether worn under a body protector or as a stand alone garment, BodyBase is the essential moisture-managing base layer for riders of all disciplines.
BodyBase is a versatile, skin-tight base layer, designed to draw moisture caused by perspiration away from the skin during exercise, which natural fibres such as cotton are unable to achieve due to their high absorbency. To work efficiently, BodyBase should be worn as a close compression fit so the technical properties within the fabric can wick moisture away to the outside of the garment, where it can evaporate easily, thereby keeping the sports rider dry and comfortable.
