The unpredictability of our horses and sport is what makes it exciting, but dangerous. Safety equipment saves lives, but which would you choose?
Horse riding is an exciting but sometimes dangerous sport and whether we are jumping a solid fence or gently hacking out, any faithful horse can be unpredictable and safety equipment is therefore a must. Safety hats have been compulsory for all disciplines, venues, events and yards for many years and with the body protector now compulsory for many sports, other aspects of our equipment are being continually analysed with safety in mind.
In this feature, Equetsrian Monthly magazine took a look at some of their favourite pieces of safety equipment and what they offer riders in protection. Many of the items featured have undergone recent safety updates and scrutiny by safety experts, but it is always important to do your own research about the safety of products. Ask a reputable tack shop or research websites about which safety or quality marks each piece of equipment has and whether it meets your sports, your insurance or your own standards.
If hat, body protector, stirrups etc.. does not fit you properly, then it will be unable to give you the maximum level of protection in the event of an accident or fall while riding. All of your safety equipment MUST be fitted by an expert who has had appropriate training to do the job properly. Never be afraid to ask your tack shop or fitter if they have had the relevant training and if so which and when?
The Airowear Zippa Sport is designed specifically for women for both everyday riding and eventing. It is particularly suitable for eventing because it offers the maximum protection by fully meeting EN13158:2000 and BETA Level 3, the standard required by 'British Eventing'. All Airowear's body protectors provide the level of protection that is designed to prevent minor bruising, reduce significant soft tissue injuries and prevent a limited number of rib fractures.
The Zippa Sport uses a special twin layer of airofoam technology to mould around the body comfort and flexibility in the rider's movement, whilst the ventilated foam construction helps to keep the garment cool during the most energetic exercise. The technically advanced microfibre covers, which come in a variety of standard, bespoke and XC colours, adds softness, durability and breathability to the garment.
The Airowear Zippa Sport is zip fronted and is made of two layers of graduated foam that darts across the chest to provide a slim, feminine and tailored appearance.
Attachable shoulderpads are available for the Zippa Sport which, if worn correctly, can significantly reduce the liklihood of injuries to the shoulder and collarbones. A medical card holder can be stitched to the shoulder protector for easy use and access of information.
