Protection offered by a Back Protector

Back Protectors offer some protection from impacts suffered as a consequence of falling. Impacts may be against soft or hard ground, or objects such as trees, vehicles, posts and rails. Injuries should be reduced in severity but cannot be entirely prevented

Back Protectors do not offer rib protection or prevent injuries involving severe torsion, flexion, and extension or crushing of the body. Back protectors do not offer full protection against spinal injuries.

This SHADOW product consists of a model 0202 back impact-absorbing foam panel insert CE certified to EN1621:2 2014 Level 2 and a fabric mid-layer garment which must be used together

Your SHADOW garment is made specifically to fit the model 0202 Back Protector panel, if an incompatible protector panel is used in our garment this may reduce the level of protection provided and could result in injury. See Model 0202 Back Protector insert pad user for further information

Selecting the Correct Size

Select the correct size for the garment size and Back Protector insert pad length.

Take into consideration the stature guide and back length ref. 1 on the back pad insert user (waist to high shoulder point) when selecting the appropriate length of back protector.

It is vital that the Back Protector length you select is the correct length and comfortable to wear. When correctly fitted your back protector should be as long as possible without restricting movement or interfering with the helmet, resulting in dangerous riding conditions. One single size cannot fit all sizes, this is why our model 0202 back protector panel comes in seven standard sizes/lengths.

The SHADOW Back Protector insert pads can only provide the maximum achievable level of protection when they are correctly positioned and adequately restrained on the wearer. It is vital that the SHADOW Back Protector you select is a correct fit and comfortable to wear in all riding positions. It should be a snug fit and worn over light clothing. The Back Protector insert pad has been designed to follow the shape of the torso and should therefore fit close to the back to provide the best performance

Garment Size

Take the below measurements to select the correct size from the size chart – Chest and Back Length (waist to high shoulder point as ref 1. in pad insert user) when selecting the appropriate SHADOW back protector

Back: from side neck point to waist

Chest: measured around the fullest part of the chest

Ref 1 – Back Length – minimum requirement of back protector

Inserting the SHADOW Back Protector pad

When fitting the Back protector insert you need to open the retaining pocket on the inside of the garment and insert the panel with the largest face sitting against the body when worn. The smallest panel is the surface that is furthest away from the body. Place the back protector so it sits level and even in line with the outline of the pocket.

As this garment is made from stretch material care should be taken to ensure that the fabric doesn’t have any wrinkles. Please ensure that the layers of the back protector insert are flat when fitted within the garment pocket.

Fitting a Back Protector

Back protector inserts will only provide the achievable protection when they are correctly positioned and restrained on the wearer by an appropriate garment. This insert has been designed to fit in our garment with a corresponding shaped inner pocket

When fitting the back protector insert within the garment pocket, the widest part of the insert must be placed to the top extending over the scapulae (the shoulder blades) and the narrow end to the base. Place the largest face of the panel against the body with the smallest panel furthest away from the body to the outer side of the garment. Place the back insert into the pocket in-line with the pocket outline shape. These garments could be worn as a base layer, mid layer or outer garment but must fit snug to the body.

It is important to ensure all the layers of the insert are flat when inserted in the garment pocket. Attempting to fit our model 0202 back protector insert pad into an incompatible garment may reduce the level of protection provided and could result in injury.
